He is a board member of the DC Cabaret Network and involved in both the DC and New York City cabaret community. He has performed in several cabarets in Washington including the well-received “Run Away with Me” as part of the DC Fringe Festival. His one-man show, “On My Way Here”, received enthusiastic reviews in both DC and New York. He is an alumnus of The Cabaret Conference at Yale and the Cabaret Intensive at Perry Mansfield.
He has had the honor to perform in such venues as the Kennedy Center, B.B. Kings (NYC), the Metropolitan Room (NYC) and the legendary Don’t Tell Mama (NYC). In addition to his solo performing, Justin is a proud member of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC and a member of the chorus’ 14 member a cappella pop ensemble, Potomac Fever. He is currently working on his debut CD schedule for release in May 2014. Justin was nominated for a WAMA Wammie Award in 2010 for his one-man show “I Was Here”, and most recently was in the critically-acclaimed and sold-out run of, “Tonight, New York City: The Rick Jensen Songbook”, which won the 2013 MAC Award for Best Review. Rick Jensen: Singer/Songwriter Rick Jensen’s compositions have become standards on the New York City Club circuit, garnering him critical praise and a sizeable collection of awards. He has been seen in venues as diverse as Downtown’s legendary Duplex cabaret to the stage of Carnegie Hall. Other solo appearances include Washington DC’s Source Theatre, The Roslyn Spectrum Theatre in Arlington, VA, The Mabel Mercer Foundation’s Cabaret Convention at Town Hall, Symphony Space, and The Metropolitan Room. The Advocate said of Spring Harvest, the debut CD on which he performs his original material, “there’s a new genius in the room…Cole Porter, Peter Allen, Tom Lehrer, and Nancy Lamott must be beaming down on their collective progeny.” Lee Lessack, Lina Koutrakos, and the late Nancy Lamott are just a few of the well known artists to have recorded a Rick Jensen tune.
His work has earned him five Manhattan Association of Cabaret and Clubs MAC Awards, Two Backstage Bistro Awards, Two National GLAMA awards. He is currently at work in the studio writing and recording his next set of releases. Most recently Rick’s song “Go Ahead And Dream” was features in the film “That’s What I Am” starring Ed Harris and Amy Madigan. And the review of Rick’s original music, “Tonight, New York City” won the 2013 MAC Award for best review.
